Reuter’s News is running a story about soon-to-be President, Barack ‘My Man’ Obama’s smoking habit. The President Elect says that he has quit but at times has fallen off the wagon. That’s cool with me. Like Obama, I too have a two decade old smoking habit. I have tried to quit so many times I have lost count. I would love to be able to control my habit to the point of being able to say that I quit but sneak a smoke every once in a while. I would be happy with one or two a day, or only when I drink coffee or beer.
Well, I have been trying to work up the nerve for another attempt to quit smoking for some time now. I mean, it is kind of ridiculous that I make my living on lung power. Those bubbles don’t blow themselves. So, I have decided that today is the day. I have three more ’smokey treats’ in my pack of Lucky Strikes. When they are gone, I am done! HERE WE GO FOLKS! TIME TO QUIT SMOKING! Of course, I will be heading directly to the Apoteke (Pharmacy) to pick up my nicotine gum. I wonder if it comes in menthol. I’m sure there will be more about this topic on the blog and know that my iphone usage will go through the roof. I’ll need something to do with the idle hands caused by quitting. Although, I do look forward to getting my taste buds back to full strength.

real licorice has an ingredient called anise
read once that its molecular shape is similar
to nicotines
point is it will fill receptor sites wanting nicotine
shaped molecules
not a rocket scientist but i can spell the title
also
stopped smoking so long ago can’t remember when it was
never really liked licorice
but
it sure beat smokin’
( camel regulars were my favorite but i’d smoke anything
after
tearin’ off the filter )

Just trick yourself.
I’ve been a smoker for roughly ten years now and have tried to quit cold turkey for about five. What I’ve found to work is to tell myself that I’m not exactly “quitting” … I’m just “conserving”. Somehow, the cravings slowly vanished and I only smoke when I really crave it. Now I smoke around three cigarettes a week… no bother the rest of the time.
Obama… love the man. I even traveled along side him in September all over the country. Cant wait until the 20th!

I trick myself often. I have applied this to my smoking habit. I try not to bring cigarettes home. Of course, now I have half-smoked leftover packs of cigarettes hidden all over the city because I hate to throw them away. I wish there were a store that sold ‘loosies’.

in “health food” stores you can find anise in various forms.
i took up amateur flute playing (bamboo types ) to
“fill the hole” created by stopping.
whistling might help some.

Now… Some time has passed – and if you managed to survive so far, the worst is over. If not, it happens. Don’t worry, eventually you’ll be able to stop. Good luck on not smoking!
What helped me (after 80 a day for years)?
- Having a reason. In my case, a new car which shouldn’t look like an ashtray. It was supposed to turn up in four weeks and I would stop then.
I thought: “Hmmm.. Four weeks? Why not stop NOW?”
With nicotine chewing gum AND patches (at 80 a day, both are just enough for starters) it was more or less ok. I was able to lower nicotine intake slowly, then, after stopping patches, nicotine gum alone worked. One day, I went to a supoermarket, bought a bag of regular chewing gum and told my body: “Aha. You believe that nicotine comes out of chewing gum now? Good! Tomorrow, you can get all the gum you want!”
Two horrible days – and the worst was over.
Best,
Jens
PS: Have cigarettes and a lighter close by. It is better to be tempted than to be afraid.
